Obituary of George Kenneth Starratt

Age 88, Windsor, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, January 18, 2015 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born November 13, 1926 in Falkland Ridge, he was a son of the late Percy David and Elva Melessa (Stodart) Starratt. George attended the one room school at Falkland Ridge and after school he taught school on a Permisive License for three terms. He later attended the Forest Ranger School, U.N.B., Fredericton, graduating in 1953 with Honors. George worked for St. Lawrence Corp., Beardmore, Ont. as a camp clerk and then Bowater Mersey, before joining the staff of Department of Lands & Forests, N.S. in 1957. He retired in 1986 as Superintendant of the Guysborough District. George had many interests and activities, including, a life member of Chedabucto Curling Club; serving as King Lion, Secretary and Treasurer and Charter Member of Guysborough Lions Club; Easter Seal Chairman, Life Line Installer and assisted in the operation of the community cable television channel. Member of Eastern Light Masonic Lodge No. 72, AF&AM, Guysborough, serving as Master in 1967 and Secretary from 1970 to 1999. He served as DDGM of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia in 1969, receiving a Meritorious Service Jewel in 1992 and 50 year Membership Jewel in May 2010. Also a member of Chedabucto Chapter O.E.S. until it closed in 1994. A member of Royal Arch Masons, Keystone Chapter, No. 24 of Port Hawkesbury, serving as High Priest and a term as District Superintendant, and Philae Temple AAONMS and the Causeway Shrine Club. Also a member of Guysborough United Baptist Church, serving as Treasurer for many years and a Deacon in later years. Since the becoming a resident of Windsor in 2001 he became a member of Windsor United Baptist Church. George was affiliated with Welsford Lodge, No. 26, AF&AM, Windsor; Hiram Chapter No. 3, Royal Arch Masons and was their High Priest for two terms. He then rejoined Philae Temple AAONMS and joined the Eastern Valley Shrine Club for a few years. George married the former Effie “Peggy” Eileen (Kennedy) (Morrison) and she passed away August 31, 2009. He is survived by sisters, Hazel, New Germany and Ethel Veinot, Bridgewater; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents and wife, George was predeceased by sisters, Olive Kaulbach, Enid Brown and Jean Wentzell; brothers, Evans and Lawrence. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., PO Box 981, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 (902-798-8317), where a Masonic service, immediately followed by the funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 24, Rev. Dr. John Bartol officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. Interment will be held at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Guysborough. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory of George may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
